Ways to protect an Inverter Air Conditioner amidst extreme weather conditions

India is a land with different weather conditions, where some places stay cold, some warm and humid, and some experience heavy rainfall. It is not easy to survive in a land with extreme weather conditions. It is also important to protect the installed inverter air conditioners from extreme or bad weather conditions so that they do not get affected in any way. This is because it is possible to experience malfunctioning, insufficient cooling etc. of an air conditioner when prone to bad or sudden weather changes.

Tips to protect an Inverter air conditioner at home

Some of how an Inverter air conditioner can be protected at home are:

  1. When a dust storm or thunderstorm approaches, the first thing to do is turn off the air conditioner’s power. If the storm is small, then the AC can be turned off from the thermostat. However, in case of a big storm or thunderstorm, the inverter air conditioner at home should be switched off at the breaker. This is because lightning during storms can damage the air conditioners and even lead to a spark or fire.
  1. After switching off the air conditioner, you should cover the outdoor unit. This step should only be considered during heavy storms. Covering the HVAC unit with a breathable, waterproof material, such as a tarp, can increase its lifespan. If moisture collects underneath such material, mold may breed.
  1. Before analyzing the upcoming thunderstorm, you should check and tighten the bolts on your AC unit. Hurricane straps are available in the market for use during heavy storms to protect air conditioners, particularly window inverter models, from damage. During storm season, we must build a cement platform as an extra precaution to protect the AC unit from damage.
  1. Another important check is to keep the AC unit away from trees. This is because during storms, branches, trees etc. can come onto the AC unit which can damage it.
  1. The most common problem during storm season is short circuits. When wiring is not properly managed and left open, this situation especially arises. Air conditioners can be easily hampered, resulting in low performance or malfunction. After installing an air conditioner, all wires should be properly covered and insulated right away.
  1. After the storm is over, never turn the air conditioner on very soon. This is because many people nearby will do the same thing which might result in an electricity surge. During storm season, this is a common mistake that damages or hampers the AC’s functioning. Also, it is important to monitor the AC unit closely and monitor carefully for strange noises, smells or fan speed before running it continuously. In case of any uncertainty, it is better to call a technician beforehand.

Common Modes in a Split Air Conditioner

Split air conditioners offer numerous modes to cater to Indian climates and weather conditions. Some of them are:

  1. Cool Mode: This is the most common mode available in an air conditioner. This is the mode at which an air conditioner functions first when purchased new.
  1. Dry Mode: This mode helps in reducing the humidity level of the room. The monsoon season is best for it.
  2. Fan Mode: In this mode, the compressor remains off and the fan works. This mode does not achieve cooling.
  1. Sleep Mode: This mode is most effective for nighttime.
  1. Turbo Mode: Some of the other names of this mode are Jet Mode, Power Chill, Quick Cool etc. This mode works differently with different models.
